About the Journal
Aims and Scope
Icon: Islamic Communication and Contemporary Media Studies (e-ISSN: 2986-7649) is a peer-reviewed academic journal that publishes original research papers, conceptual analyses, and reviews in the fields of Islamic communication science and contemporary media studies. The journal aims to bridge Islamic studies and communication sciences, fostering an academic exchange that imports communication approaches into the realm of Islamic studies and exports Islamic perspectives into media and communication scholarship in Indonesia and beyond.
Published by the Faculty of Da’wah, State Islamic University of Kiai Haji Achmad Siddiq Jember (UIN KHAS Jember), and managed by the Department of Islamic Communication and Broadcasting (KPI), Icon provides a platform for researchers, scholars, and practitioners to advance the discourse on communication, media, and religion.
The journal welcomes manuscripts employing theoretical, empirical, qualitative, quantitative, and comparative-historical methodologies and encourages interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary, and monodisciplinary approaches.

Types of Published Articles
Icon publishes the following types of articles:

Research Articles — Original studies that present theoretical or empirical findings in Islamic communication, media studies, or related disciplines. Manuscripts should include clear research objectives, methods, results, and discussions, highlighting the contribution to the field.

Review Articles — Critical reviews that synthesize existing literature, map emerging trends, and identify future directions in Islamic communication and media research. Review papers may discuss theoretical developments, methodological innovations, or current debates in the discipline.
All submissions must demonstrate academic rigor, originality, and adherence to ethical research standards.
Publication Frequency
Icon publishes two issues per year — April and October — with each issue containing peer-reviewed research and review articles. This biannual schedule ensures consistent dissemination of high-quality scholarship in the fields of Islamic communication and media studies.
Language
The journal accepts manuscripts written in Indonesian, Arabic, or English. Authors are encouraged to ensure clarity, accuracy, and academic style appropriate to the chosen language.
Open Access Policy
Icon is an open-access journal, meaning that all published articles are freely available online at https://icon.uinkhas.ac.id. Readers may read, download, copy, distribute, or link to full texts without prior permission from the publisher or authors, ensuring global accessibility to knowledge.
Peer Review Process
All submitted manuscripts undergo a double-blind peer review process. The editorial board conducts an initial screening for scope relevance and plagiarism checks before sending manuscripts to expert reviewers. Only papers meeting academic and ethical standards are accepted for publication.
Ownership and Management
Icon: Islamic Communication and Contemporary Media Studies is owned and published by the Faculty of Da’wah, State Islamic University of Kiai Haji Achmad Siddiq Jember (UIN KHAS Jember). The journal is managed by the Department of Islamic Communication and Broadcasting (KPI), supported by academic and administrative resources from the university to maintain scholarly quality and editorial independence.
Copyright and Licensing
Authors retain the copyright of their works published in Icon. Articles are distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0), allowing sharing, adaptation, and redistribution with appropriate credit to the authors and the journal.
Revenue Sources
The journal’s operational costs are covered by institutional support from UIN KHAS Jember. Icon does not charge submission or publication fees (no APCs). Funding from the Faculty of Da’wah ensures that the journal remains open-access and free for both authors and readers.
Advertising and Direct Marketing
Icon maintains strict separation between editorial decisions and any promotional activity. Advertisements, if accepted, are limited to academic conferences, educational programs, or research-related events relevant to the journal’s scope. The journal may conduct direct outreach to researchers ethically and transparently to promote new issues or calls for papers.
Journal History
Established under the Faculty of Da’wah, UIN KHAS Jember, Icon: Islamic Communication and Contemporary Media Studies was created to address the growing need for scholarly discussions on the intersection between Islamic communication and modern media. Since its inception, Icon has aimed to nurture a dynamic intellectual environment for scholars exploring the evolving landscape of communication, media, and religion in Indonesia and the wider Muslim world.
